John G. Zickmantel
John Zickmantel, a Managing Principal of Kor Structural, brings nearly three decades of structural engineering experience to every project while mentoring the firm’s growing engineering talent and sharing his wealth of design expertise.
John will scheme the entire structural system of all his projects, including the seismic force resisting system, and he is particularly skilled at finding structural solutions for complicated building arrangements that are both simple and efficient. In every project he also aims to balance the original design intent of the Architect, yet always taking into consideration the Client’s needs and desires.
Clients value John’s focus on delivering cost-effective designs, meeting accelerated schedules and the ongoing coordination with the Architect and other consultants to ensure the integrity of the original structural scheme. A master in collaboration, John’s greatest value may be his willingness to work closely with the contractors and the construction team in the field. He enjoys the hands-on experience of constructing the buildings in the real world and typically has very strong and close working relationships with the site superintendents.
Notable projects that John has worked on include Rogers Arena South Tower in Vancouver BC, Transit Village in Surrey BC, The Link in Vancouver BC, Bordeaux in Burnaby BC, King Edward Village in Vancouver BC, and the Maple Street Apartments in Bellingham WA.
After graduating from the University of British Columbia with a Bachelor in Civil Engineering in 1991 alongside John Markulin, John worked for another local structural engineering firm before joining our team in 1998. John continued with his studies to earn his Master of Engineering from the University of British Columbia in 1999 and his Struct.Eng. (BC) designation in 2016. He is currently licensed to practice in British Columbia, Alberta, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, Manitoba, and Washington.
Before realizing his passion for structural engineering, John was a professional drummer leading the local live music scene with his band mates.
